qAnonymous:

I just don't think Asians have a place in the MCU?

bisteverogers:

asgardodinsons:

you sent me two asks about this anon and I’m just…not really sure why?? you would think this?? or feel the need to tell me about it?? the mcu literally spans across the entire universe, has included characters from multiple alien races and planets, and you. don’t think asians. have a place there. do you realize the country of Asia contains nearly 60% of the world’s population? And that “asians” is a broad umbrella term that can cover anyone from Chinese to Pakistani to Cambodian descent? And that people from all over the world watch these movies and don’t even see themselves represented on screen, feeding this idea that the only people who can be superheroes are mainly white, cis males??

please think about what you are saying here, and why you think erasing an entire ethnicity from a cinematic universe as all-encompassing as marvel is an opinion you should even have. We need MORE representation, not less. we need young people looking up at that screen and seeing superheroes like them and feeling EMPOWERED. one thing we don’t need are statements like these that only reveal hatred and ignorance.

so not only are we:

  • already relegated to side-bit parts and barely given any lines to speak, therefore rendering us silenced & ornamental (helen cho in aou);
  • given parts in huge franchises only to eventually get killed off for no reason (hogun in ragnarok);
  • cast as other asian ethnicities because we’re “interchangeable” (kenneth choi, a korean, as jim morita, a japanese soldier who dum dum dugan actually considers leaving behind in azzano until morita had to clarify that he was from fresno, as if he had to prove that he had to be worthy of having his life saved, as if he did not deserve to be saved from hydra unless his americanness superseded his asianness);
  • painted over so that you can’t even see us (minn-erva in captain marvel) or have our features exaggerated to the point of making a caricature of us (mantis in gotg 2); and
  • used for comic relief or as props to glorify the white, more conventionally-appealing leads (wong in doctor strange; ned leeds in smhc; jimmy woo in amatw)

but we’ve also had to wait over 22 movies and 10+ years to even get an announcement of any probably asian-led mcu film (shang-chi; maybe kamala khan)… and we shouldn’t even have a place in the mcu? have we met your quota, anon? hm? am i less deserving of a superhero to look up to, of a team to cheer for, of good and accurate and healthy and – god forbid – respectful onscreen representation of myself because i’m asian? what a fucking joke.
